The first week of January is always full of good intentions. We often make resolutions like eating better and going to the gym more often. I’m not knocking those things, trust me, they’re on my list too. But I can’t help but think that if resolutions are good for me personally that I should probably be making some for my business too. As an MSP or MPS provider I’m sure you have some resolutions yourself. Well, Tigerpaw is here to help! Here are 7 resolutions that will help you to grow your business and make 2020 the best year ever.
#1 Make learning a thing again
The reason they send us to school when we’re kids is because it helps us to become MORE. So why do we stop? Because work gets in the way. But it doesn’t have to. No time to read? Listen to an e-Book. No time to read about industry trends? Listen to some podcasts. The time we spend commuting to work, at the gym, or even cooking dinner, those are all great times to do some learning.
I personally listen to the Frankly MSP podcast, the Selling From the Heart podcast, as well as Tigerpaw Radio (you can listen too later in January!!). No matter which ones you find to listen to, just make sure you listen and learn in 2020.
#2 Clear your head
Do you know why we sleep? Because the brain needs to clear out the gunk that accumulates during the day. But sleep isn’t enough, it’s time for something more directed: Clarity breaks. At Tigerpaw, we are required to take at least one per month, but I’m making a resolution to increase them to twice a month. The idea is to break away from work, find a place where you can think, and just open your mind. It’s not about getting work done, it’s about allowing your brain to bring you ideas. I keep a clarity break journal and I’m amazed at some of the new and innovative things that I’ve come up with.

#3 Be more social
I know, I know, Facebook is a waste of time and if you have to read one more post by your supposed friends bashing one political party or the next… But let’s put that aside for a moment and talk about a social network that is geared entirely towards business: LinkedIn. I have a strong presence on LinkedIn and can tell you that the amount of benefit I get from it is astounding. Calling prospects and getting voicemail and zero email response? Try LinkedIn messaging. Post a blog relevant to your customers and prospects and share that with your network. I get people reaching out to me after reading content that helped them and can tell you it works. And remember those podcasts we talked about earlier? You have expertise, why not be a guest?
#4 Get over your insecurities
Don’t know if you’ve been watching the news but MSPs are being targeted left and right by ransomware and bad actors. The reason? They want to use you to get money from your customers. Don’t let them. Contact your preferred security vendor and partner to find ways to mitigate the dangers of being a new target. Most MSPs that suffer a ransomware attack don’t recover, so resolve to never, ever, EVER let that be you! And once you’ve got this down, why not research some offerings and then learn how to sell it and protect your customers too?
#5 Learn your ABC’s
Do you know the A-B-C customer segmentation model? You should, because the “C” customers are acting as a sea anchor and slowing your growth. You know the ones: Low margin but big voices – more work than they are worth. You don’t keep friends who crap all over you, so why customers? The “C” customers take 80% of your time and resources, resources and time that could be spent getting NEW customers into that “A” group.

#6 Grow a money tree
I am continually amazed at how few MSPs are rockin’ the recurring revenue model through subscription. I hear all kinds of reasons for it: “My customers won’t go for it. Our products don’t work for subscription. We couldn’t do it if we wanted to.” I’m here to tell you that you can and should.
Tigerpaw used to be 100% non-recurring revenue. Now we’re 99% recurring revenue. It was challenging and some days the transition was painful, but now that we’re on the other side, we are better for it. We make decisions differently. We do more for our customers. Everybody wins.
