There’s been a lot of chatter in the last few days about the coming demise of one of the largest providers of toner supplies for the office equipment channel.
Yes, I’m talking about Clover Imaging Group. A company that likely most of us have either dealt with in the past or continue to deal with today. A company that has done right by the managed print industry for a lot of years, and, hopefully, will continue to do that for many years to come.
Perhaps you think me naive, but trust me: I know the facts that everybody else knows to date regarding what’s happening with Clover Imaging. I’ve read the Bloomberg article and others. It’s just that I’m not ready to throw in the towel, to abandon a solid partner who has earned my support and respect for many, many years.
Could things go totally south? Of course they could. But could the folks at Clover Imaging come together and weather this tough situation only to come out stronger and wiser on the other side? Yes, I really, really believe they could.
I think we need to spend our efforts growing our businesses and supporting our partners until we absolutely have no other choice. And I would do this for any of my partners. I would do it for my OEM partners, my software partners — I would do it for anybody that has done right by me over the years in my journey called managed print.
So what am I going to do? I’m going to do the following 3 things, and I encourage you to join me:
Continue to support Clover Imaging
If you are buying product and services from Clover Imaging, continue to do so. There is every chance that they will weather this and restructure in a way that is better for them and for us.
I’m not saying don’t have a backup plan — you likely buy from multiple suppliers today already — but I am saying let’s support a friend when they need that support the most. We’re currently working on some awesome integrations with Clover for release later this year, and we’ll continue to work on those integrations because we committed to a partner that we’d get them done. As far as we’re concerned it’s business as usual.
And yes, I used the word “friend” because they have been that to most of us reading this article. The company is made up of some pretty fine people, many of which we all know very well, and they need our support and business and we should continue to give them both.
Remember what Clover Imaging Group has done for our industry
Clover is one of the companies that made managed print businesses possible in the first place! Most managed print providers have a strong mix of compatible toner in their portfolio, and it’s made us all a lot of money over the years and, hopefully, will continue to for a long time yet.
Yes, they are a massive company now, but we ALL made a ton of money along the way with them. They don’t feel like a big company. They feel like one that knows they have to earn our business every single day. They’ve helped us to grow a channel from scratch, and, as the channel evolves, let’s remember that before cutting ties and running.
Believe in the imaging channel and the opportunities it still brings
I’m not going to say things are rosy and that we’re not in the midst of some of the biggest challenges we’ve had to face. It’s not just Clover Imaging — we ALL face and live with these challenges every single day. We always have. From typewriters to standalone copiers to networked printers to document management to digital migration, we have evolved and moved through the hard times.
Print is not going away. People might do less of it. People may want to have information provided in new and non-page related ways. People may be looking for digital alternatives for some of their workflows. But paper and toner are still going to make a lot of people money for a lot of years to come. Do we have to diversify? Hello, it’s me writing this, you know how I feel about that.
So that’s what I’ll be doing anyway, and I know a lot of my industry friends and colleagues will be doing the same. I hope you’ll join us.
